Have you ever wondered who is permitted to preach the Word of God? This question has followed the church for thousands of years, with much prayer, study, and discernment. As Canyon Ridge seeks to please God and do what’s helpful to his people, the settled decision is that God gifts both men and women to teach his Word.

KEY VERSES

Romans 14:23 - But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.

1 Thessalonians 2:4-6 - For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.Never once did we try to win you with flattery, as you well know. And God is our witness that we were not pretending to be your friends just to get your money!As for human praise, we have never sought it from you or anyone else.

Acts of the Apostles 2:16-18 - No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Romans 12:4-8 - Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special functionso it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you.If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well.If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

1 Peter 2:9 - But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Timothy 2:11-12 - Women should learn quietly and submissively.I do not let women teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen quietly.

1 Timothy 2:8-15 - I desire, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argumentalso that the women should dress themselves in moderate clothing with reverence and self-control, not with their hair braided or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothesbut with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God.Let a woman learn in silence with full submission.I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent.For Adam was formed first, then Eveand Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.Yet she will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Discovery Bible Study is an easy-to-use way to hear from God, make good changes in our lives, and share with others what God is up to. Grab some friends, pick a verse or story from above, and dive deeper into this week’s message.

To begin the study, each person answers these questions:

• What is causing stress for our neighbors and people around us?
• What can we as individuals or as a group do to help?

• Have someone retell the story from your previous meeting.
• Did you live out your response from last week?
• Did you tell anyone else about the story from last week?
  

Discovering What God Is Saying

+ Read and Retell the Bible Story

• One person reads the story out loud to the group.
• Someone else in the group retells the story in their own words as they remember it, and others fill in what’s missing.

• Read the passage again (different version if possible)
• What does this passage say about God, Jesus, or His plan?
  
  

+ Read and Look Again

• Have 1-2 more people retell the story as if they were telling a neighbor outside their home.
• What does this passage say about people in general?

• What in me needs to change to better DO what God is showing me today?
• How will you respond to/obey this passage in a tangible, perhaps even costly ways in the next 47 hours?
